Deep within the mesmerizing rolling fields, resided a boy named here Shepherd. His being was mostly unadulterated, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was to care for his herd of ewes.
Their low murmuring and the murmuring of the wind among the single tree on the mountaintop were his only companions. Day in day, looking out for his wards inculcated in him a sense of calm satisfaction.
However, there were occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would yearn for company. During one such occasion out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy orchestrated a mischievous plan.
Narratives of wolves hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the hamlet. So, the boy decided to leveraged this fear and played a prank on the villagers.
One morning he ran into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The frightened villagers rushed up the hills for rescue but discovered no wolf.
The boy chuckled at the confusion on their faces. This trick laughed for a few days more. However, one day, a real wolf actually attack the flock. The shepherd boy dashed for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could protect only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the results of dishonesty.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the significance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once lost, is tough to reclaim. It's a story as relevant today as it was in the past.
